Keyword Guide

Guidelines for creating a list of keywords for your website.

The meta keywords tag allows text to be inserted into an html page that does not display when viewed through a browser. Some search engines will read these words in association with keywords in the page content to assist their ranking of your site. Note, this is not the same as having hidden text on the page, a practice which search engines view as spamming.

  • Research the competition and use view source (right click mouse on page) to see what keywords they are using.
  • Make a list of keywords by imagining you are a potential User. What would they type into a search engine to find you and your services?
  • If appropriate include keywords that are often or commonly misspelled.
  • Do not needlessly repeat keywords or use keywords that are not relevant to your content.
  • Include keywords in your page content.
  • Put your most important keywords first.
  • Bear in mind some search engines cut-off at 25 keywords, some at 100 and others like Google, pay no attention to them at all.
